National Recognition for Inclusion Excellence at Cherry Tree Academy

Cherry Tree Academy has been awarded the nationally recognised Inclusion Quality Mark (IQM) following a detailed assessment celebrating the school’s deeply embedded culture of belonging, care and ambition for every child.

The award recognises schools where inclusion is central to everyday life, and assessors praised Cherry Tree’s “warm and caring relationships”, its nurturing ethos and the unwavering commitment shown by staff to children and families across the school community.

Inspectors highlighted the school’s “clear moral purpose” and described inclusion as the “golden thread” running through all aspects of school life.

The report recognised the significant challenges faced by many families within the local community and praised the school’s determined and compassionate response. Leaders were commended for creating a safe, respectful and aspirational environment where children feel valued and supported to thrive both personally and academically.

Throughout the assessment, the inclusive culture of the school was repeatedly highlighted. The assessor described feeling “warmly welcomed” from the moment they arrived and noted that the ethos of the school “underpins, permeates, and shapes every aspect of school life.”

Particular praise was given to the strong relationships between staff, children and families, alongside the school’s ambitious curriculum and carefully designed support for pupils with additional needs. Inspectors recognised the way staff know children as individuals and adapt learning thoughtfully to ensure every child can participate successfully.

The report also celebrated the school’s commitment to reading, language development and oracy, describing the central library and language-rich learning environment as a strength of the school.

Children themselves played an important part in the assessment day, speaking confidently about the values of respect, inclusion and teamwork that shape daily life at Cherry Tree. Inspectors described meeting pupils as “an absolute privilege” and praised the way children articulated the school’s inclusive culture and sense of belonging.

Parents also shared powerful feedback during the visit, describing the school as a “second family”, a “safe haven” and a place where “staff make the time for us.”

Adam Dawson, Headteacher at Cherry Tree Academy, said:

“We are incredibly proud to have achieved the Inclusion Quality Mark. This recognition means a great deal because it reflects who we are as a school community every single day. At Cherry Tree, we want every child and family to feel known, supported and valued. The award recognises the care, commitment and teamwork shown by our staff, children and wider community, and the belief that every child deserves to feel that they belong. I would like to thank our staff, families, governors and pupils for the part they have all played in this achievement.”

The report also highlighted the wider support provided to families through the school’s pastoral team, Family Support Worker and SEND provision, alongside the extensive enrichment opportunities available to pupils. Inspectors praised the school’s work in improving attendance, reducing suspensions and ensuring children feel safe, included and successful in school life.
