Ackworth Mill Dam Academy celebrates successful Ofsted inspection
As we begin the new academic year, we’re delighted to share and celebrate an important success from the summer term at Ackworth Mill Dam Academy.
In May, the academy underwent its Ofsted inspection, becoming only the second Waterton school to be inspected under the updated framework. The school secured the Expected Standard consistently across all areas, with safeguarding standards also met, marking a significant milestone in its improvement journey under the leadership of the new Executive Leadership Team.
Inspectors found that pupils generally achieve well, with Year 6 pupils typically attaining at or above national averages in reading, writing and mathematics. They also highlighted the secure progress made by pupils with SEND and those who are disadvantaged, alongside pupils’ pride in their work and the way they build knowledge successfully over time.
The report recognised the calm, purposeful and welcoming culture across the academy. Pupils were described as “extremely well mannered and kind to each other”, with leaders’ strengthened approach to behaviour contributing to a dramatic reduction in behaviour incidents during the year. Attendance was also recognised as a high priority, supported by close work with families and external partners.
Inspectors praised the school’s well-considered curriculum, strong teaching of reading and phonics, and its focus on developing vocabulary and oracy. They also recognised the school’s inclusive approach, with pupils’ additional needs identified quickly and thoughtful adaptations made to support pupils to access learning successfully.
Leadership was another clear strength. Inspectors highlighted the ambition of leaders, the positive impact of the newly established leadership team and the strong relationship between the academy and Waterton Academy Trust. Staff described leaders as “leading from the front”, valuing the way they model expectations and work alongside colleagues.
The report also captures what makes Ackworth Mill Dam a special place for its pupils. Children arrive each morning to a warm and personal welcome, feel safe and valued, enjoy their learning and benefit from a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond the curriculum.
This outcome reflects the commitment and hard work of the whole Ackworth Mill Dam team, alongside the collective support of colleagues from across Waterton who worked closely with school leaders throughout the improvement journey. It is a strong reflection of what can be achieved when school and Trust teams work together with shared purpose, ambition and determination.
